To iespējams paveikt tikai ar helikoptera palīdzību. Viņi visi kopā dzīvo no civilizācijas nošķirtā laivmājā. Apkārtne ir pasakaini skaista, taču par dzīves apstākļiem gan to nevar sacīt.

MEGASTRUCTURES

It is one of the most ambitious construction projects of modern times: building the world´s deepest submarine tunnel beneath one of the busiest shipping lanes on the planet, just 12 miles north of one of the most active fault lines today. The Marmaray Project will stretch the length of three football fields underneath the Bosporus - linking Istanbul´s Asian and European halves. To engineers, the greatest challenge was equipping the tunnel with anti-seismic technology to survive the major earthquake predicted for Istanbul...until they unearthed the greatest nautical archaeological find of the century. An ancient port of Constantinople.

Big, Bigger, Biggest

Look at engineering leaps that have helped different types of structures go from big to bigger to biggest. The race is on to become the world’s biggest. Crowned the biggest in their fields, structures like the 600-metre Burj Dubai skyscraper and the 99,000-ton USS Nimitz represent the most cutting-edge advances in architecture and engineering today. But these mind-blowing 21st century constructions would not be possible without the historical breakthroughs that propelled these fields to new heights. Big, Bigger, Biggest examines the various engineering leaps that helped these structures become historical giants. How did bridges evolve in size from simple bamboo walkways to modern marvel...

Predator CSI

The psychological effects of war are no longer considered just a human condition. Africa is cultivating gangs of juvenile delinquents, wreaking havoc in the wild. African elephants are becoming edgy 30 years of poaching and conservation management is beginning to backfire, resulting in abnormal violent behavior. In Kenya, elephants are targeting and killing the Maasai tribes cattle. In South Africa, 36 rhinos are killed in a single park over a period of two years. And in Western Uganda a village is being subjected to indiscriminate and violent attacks by local elephants - where, previously they had roamed peacefully. What is provoking Africas gentle giant to these violent outbursts? A group of scientists help to solve this unusual psychological mystery. As they go over individual elephant case histories, a picture builds. Here is an animal with extraordinary parallels to us; similar lifespan, childhood development, and complex functions of thought and feeling. If we accept that elephants are emotional, could they also have emotional problems? Armed with an understanding of their natural family history, we look at the way some conservationists have managed elephants in the last 30 years - sometimes wiping out entire older age structures. Has our meddling caused this violent behavior? Some scientists have recently labeled elephants with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. We talk to neurologists and psychiatrists to explore the science of stress and ask can we really compare elephants with people? We visit an elephant orphanage and ask - how would you treat an elephant with psychological damage, and more importantly what if we cant?

MACHINES OF WAR

Mobile protected firepower. Thats what every General wants. What they are describing is the tank. And since it first appeared on the muddy fields of northern France in the First World War, designers and engineers have been trying to perfect and improve these steel leviathans. In this program, a U.S. tank crew-in-training will give us an exclusive look at the latest Abrams M1A2 main battle tank at the US Armys Fort Hood, while tank historians and war veterans will spotlight the major advances that make up the evolutionary timeline of the tanks development. What makes an Abrams one of the best tanks of today? In the near 100-year history of the tank, how did we end up here? A tank is defined by three factors: Mobility, Firepower and Protection. Out on the range at Fort Hood, the modern Abrams tank demonstrates extraordinary agility and speed for a machine that weighs almost 70 tons when battle ready. Straight away, it has one distinguishing feature that sets it apart - its track. A tank simply lays out its own road in front of the vehicle and then runs over it. The tracks spread lessens the burden of the Abramss awesome weight on the road surface. Using personal testimony and archive material, combined with our own specially shot footage from inside a tank during firing live ammunition, we move on to tell the story of firepower. The Abrams is packed with the latest technology to find and kill targets at up to 3 kilometres away. This technical superiority was demonstrated during the first Gulf War of 1991, when tanks under the command of Lt Gen Paul Funk were able to find and kill enemy tanks before the Iraqi commanders could even rotate their turrets. With live action and evocative computer graphics, we see the full extent of the modern tanks systems, including thermal imaging for accurate night vision, and pinpoint laser rangefinding technology. We contrast this with the limited equipment available to the gunners of the First World War they used a technique called straddling to find and range their targets. Quite simply, it was a case of trial and error, firing rounds in the hope that they were on target and adjusting the barrel accordingly. It was a technique they learned from gunners of the 17th century. A tank is also defined by the ammunition it fires and there has been considerable development over the years. We show how the latest armour piercing rounds have evolved from 17th century ideas . To get more power from their cannons, they used a block of wood, or sabot, behind each cannon ball. This made sure that all the explosive power from the charge was used to thrust the ball out of the barrel as quickly as possible. We explain how in the latter stages of the 2nd World War the British came up with a revised version of the sabot round that quite literally flies through the air like a large crossbow bolt and can penetrate even the thickest armor. The film concludes with a look at armor development and how the work of a German scientist in the late 1960s produced the innovative and effective Explosive Reactive Armor that is often used on tanks today. The tank has been a crucial part of warfare since the 1st World War. New technologies are being tried all the time, such as active armour and electric guns, but as recent conflicts show, so far, there is no substitute for the tank.
